BUILDING THE VISION

The Pittsburgh Project Newsletter - December 2025

From Hanging Out to Hearing God

Twenty Minutes that Changed Everything

At the beginning of December, middle school students from The Pittsburgh Project attended our annual Laurelville retreat. One of the students we took was Zion, who goes by Peanut. He only comes to program every so often and this year was his first trip with us. He had lots of fun hanging out and playing games over the weekend - but his highlight took place during what's known as 20 Minutes of Silence.

During 20 Minutes of Silence, students are encouraged to go somewhere outside, secluded, by themselves, and spend 20 minutes talking to God. Afterwards we had our cabin small group time and Peanut was excited to be the first one to speak when we asked how their 20 minutes went.

He opened up saying that he’s always enjoyed The Pittsburgh Project and even things like worship, but he had never actually spoken to God. During this 20 minutes, he said he truly prayed for the first time and that he wanted to get closer to God. He even closed our small group time in prayer.

It's always hard to know what something like this really means to a student, but the next day the retreat speaker had everyone close their eyes and asked students to raise their hand if they had decided to give their lives to God this weekend. Lo and behold - Peanut's hand was raised! Moments like this truly reflect our mission to share hope, empower youth, and build community.
